I have a 2001 1.9 tdi auto galaxy. The other day a message saying STOP appeared on the dash, check coolent, I did and sure enough the expansion bottle was almost empty, i filled it back to the max line and have drove it about 130 miles and the same message appeared today, and yet again barely any coolent in the expansion bottle. Odly i am not having any overheating problems, there is no steam pouring out the bonnet and everything seems to be running fine. I am worried that I will cause greater damage if i continue to drive it.

Are there any common areas where the fault will be, any suggestions anyone??

many thanks, Tone.

P.S) funny car went in for an oil change last week, now the problems here, maybe just coincidence!

just had a look under the car, there is coolent dripping from underneath, it appears to be coming from the pipes at the back of the engine, and not near the rad etc, cant get under enough to see exactly where from so looks like the garage will have to do it

Very strange indeed. :)

Tone, did you or the garage that did the oil change by any chance change the coolant/water, if yes, then the coolant/water does take time to settle.

I take it there is no water contamination in the oil and vice versa as this would suggest gasket problems, And i assume you have checked that there is no leaks of coolant under the vehicle.

EDIT. I see that you have pinpointed the problem.

I have found the water leaking, but have not found the exact location, so not too sure whats causing it yet, although I am relieved as I assume that means no gasket probs? whats the worst it can be, water pump, pipe or expansion tank im guessing?

Won't a can of Radweld sort this out or is it not advisable on the Galaxy? Certainly worked a treat on the old Espace I had.

I remember back in the 70's I used eggs to cure leaks on a mini. Sure it probably didn't do any good long term but it cured the leak ok. (not suggesting you buy half a dozen eggs for your gal but if you did make sure they've got the lion mark lol).
